Deidre DeJear Early Life

Deidre DeJear was born in 1986 in Jackson, Mississippi. Though we don’t know the day or month, we are certain that she’s 36 this year.

She lost her mum at a very tender age. By the time she was 12, her father, David, remarried and relocated to Tusla, Oklahoma.

Deidre, however, admitted on her Instagram page that her father gave her all the necessary support she needed while growing up. Deidre kept her private life private and would not reveal much information about herself.

In 2005, Deidre co-founded and served as the chair of Back 2 School Iowa. In 2008, Deidre founded her business consulting firm, Caleo Enterprises. Caleo Enterprises is a promoting and marketing firm.

She also worked as a consultant with the African American Leadership Forum of Des Moines. She has been affiliated with Links, Inc., and the NAACP.

In 2019, Deidre joined the board of the non-profit organization Healthy Birth Day, Inc. and later on became the vice president of the board. Being a former avid basketballer, she coached the women basketball players at East High women employees. During this time, she traveled across the US and was able to impact the lives of several women.

Deidre claimed that her grandmother, Mattie Washington, exposed her to politics. Her grandmother indeed served as the county election commissioner in Yazoo County, Mississippi.

However, information showed that Deidre entered into politics in 2012 when she participated in Barak Obama’s reelection campaign. Her role was to urge African-Americans to vote in Iowa.

In 2018, Deidre ran for Iowa secretary of state. She won the party’s nomination by defeating Jim Mowrer in the primary. However, she lost to incumbent Paul Pate in the general election.

Nevertheless, that move made Deidre became the first African American woman in Iowa to be nominated by a major political party for a statewide office. In 2020, she was the Iowa campaign chair for Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.

Currently, Deidre DeJear is running for election for Governor of Iowa under the platform of the Democratic Party. She is on the ballot in the general election on November 8, 2022, since she won the party’s primary.

Kim Reynolds, the current governor of Iowa is the first female governor of the state. If Deidre eventually wins the election, she will become the first Black governor of Iowa. Deidre claims that her race is just a part of her identity but being an Iowan is what matters most.
