MRI Technologist – Job Description
An MRI tech is a medical professional who takes photographs with an MRI scanner of a patient’s organs and tissues. MRI technicians or technologists, as they are sometimes called, monitor computerized MRI scanners to take photographs of the insides of a patient’s body and ensure that images are of the highest quality in order to detect any malfunctions. These images provide physicians and other health care professionals with a way of studying the interior of the body.
The MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine is a very common and easy-to-use medical device that has become the standard diagnostic tool for the brain and spine in recent years.
The MRI machine uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of areas inside the human body. The magnetic fields are generated by a large, doughnut-shaped electromagnet that creates a field that penetrates to different depths in different tissues.
MRI technicians work with a wide range of medical technology in order to gather data about the brain, spinal cord, heart, and other organs that are then used to diagnose diseases, treat medical conditions, plan surgical procedures and monitor treatment progress.
Generally, MRI technicians need to be able to use the necessary tools and equipment according to workplace policies and procedures. The following are skills that MRI Techs could be expected to have:
- Ability to safely operate MRI equipment
- Ability to diagnose and repair malfunctioning parts of MRI equipment
- Knowledge of calibration methods for MRI scanners
- Able to meet safety standards for high voltage or radioactive material exposure, including wearing appropriate protective equipment, such as gloves, lab coat, mask, and goggles
- Ability to work as part of a team in a hospital environment
