Jared Polis Biography

Jared Polis is the 43rd governor of Colorado, who is a Businessman and American politician under the Democratic party, and has been serving the people of Colorado since 2019.

He served five terms as the United States representative from the 2nd congressional district in Colorado from 2009-2019. He also previously served on the Colorado State Board of Education.

In June 2019, In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, which is a watershed moment in the modern LGBTQ rights movement, Queerty named Jared among the Pride50, calling him a “trailblazing individual, who actively ensure society remains moving towards equality, acceptance, and dignity for all queer people.”

Jared Polis Early Life and Education

Jared was born at Boulder Community Hospital on the 12th of May 1975 in Colorado, into the family of Stephen Schutz who is of Jewish descent, and Susan Polis, who are the founders of book publishing and greeting cards company Blue Mountains Art.

He grew up in Boulder, where he spent most of his childhood and early days in elementary and junior high school before moving to San Diego. Living in San Diego, Jared attended La Jolla Country Day School where he was a high flyer in various school activities and graduated with multiple honors.

He then went to Princeton University to further his education studying and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics in 1996. In his final year, he wrote a senior thesis of 157 pages titled; “Paradigm Shift: Politics in the Information Age” under  Carol.M. Swain’s supervision.

While at Princeton, he was actively involved in politics and various other social activities, serving as the Communication director for the Undergraduate student government in Princeton. He was also a member of the Princeton Juggling club, as well as the Model Congress.

While in school, Jared Cofounder America Information Science (AIS) which is an internet service provider but later sold it in 1998. Since then he has become a well-established investor, investing and establishing companies such as; blue mountains.com an online greeting card website, Pro Flowers, an online florist which was later renamed Provide Commerce Inc. Along with other investors he founded TechStars in 2006.

In 2000, Jared decided to legally change his surname from Schutz (his father’s) to Polis (his mother’s) in order to help raise awareness for a fundraiser and also because he prefers it as it sounds better.

Jared is openly gay and married to Marlon Ries, they recently wedded in 2021 in a small ceremony of Jewish fashion. Together they have 2 children, a boy and a girl who he loves to play video games with. In 2008, he became the first same-sex parent to be elected into congress, and has continued to push boundaries for the LGBTQ community.

Jared Polis Political Career

Jared was one of the wealthiest Congressmen during his tenure, with a network of about $300 million.

Jared is known as a member of the “Gang of Four”, a set of four wealthy Coloradans whose efforts support the Democratic Party in a statewide legislative race. Their efforts have been strongly linked with Colorado’s shift towards the Democratic party in the early 2000s.

Between 2000 and 2007, Jared served as chairman and vice chairman of the Colorado State Board of Education after winning a close-call vote against Ben Alexander who was the incumbent chairman.

Later in 2008, Jared Polis won a crowded Democratic primary and went on to win the general election for Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District. He was retained and ease reelected in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.

In 2018, Jared announced his interest in running for governor of Colorado. He later won, defeating Republican candidate Walker Stapleton winning 53.4% of the vote.

He broke the record and became the first openly gay person to be elected governor of any state, as the first openly gay person to serve as governor was Jim McGreevy of New Jersey who disclosed his sexuality during his tenure.
