Joe Lombardo Biography

Joe Lombardo is an American law enforcement officer and member of the Republican Party who is on the ballot in the general election on November 8, 2022 after he advanced from the Republican primary on June 14, 2022.

He’s the current 17th Sheriff of Clark County and head of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), a combined law enforcement agency for Las Vegas and Clark County; an office he has held since 2015.

Joe is not running for re-election as Clark County sheriff but is instead a Republican candidate for governor of Nevada in 2022.

Joe Lombardo Early life

Joe Lombardo was born on November 8, 1962, in Japan. His father was an Air Force veteran. In 1976, Joseph moved to Las Vegas, Nevada at age 14. He is currently 60 years old.

Joseph graduated from Rancho High School in 1980. Lombardo has a B.S. in Civil Engineering and a Master’s degree in Crisis Management, both from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Joe Lombardo Career

​Joseph served in the US Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard. He began his law enforcement career in 1988 as a police officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD). He rose through the ranks, becoming a sergeant in 1996 and a lieutenant in 2001.

In October 2011, Joseph became deputy sheriff of the police services group, which included the department’s technical services, information technology, radio systems, and professional standards divisions.

On December 4, 2013, Lombardo announced his candidacy for Clark County Sheriff. On November 4, 2014, he narrowly won the election against former Democratic LVMPD Captain Larry Burns. Joseph took office on January 4, 2015.

In 2018, Joseph won re-election into office, defeating four challengers. He was sworn in for a second term on January 4, 2019.

Joe Lombardo Political Career

On June 28, 2021, Lombardo officially announced his campaign for Governor of Nevada. On June 14, 2022, he won the Republican nomination with 38.3% of the vote, defeating 11 other candidates, including Reno attorney and former boxer Joey Gilbert and former US Senator Dean Heller. He will face incumbent Gov. Steve Sisolak in the general election.  

Joseph has offered his service to his country. He has also dedicated himself to protecting his communities – serving in law enforcement over the last 30 years. Though Joseph has a good reputation while in public services, the incumbent Steve Sisolak makes a very good opponent. Hence, his victory requires much effort, adding to the fact that he hasn’t handled any public political office other than in the police.
